ChipHack: Introduction to FPGA Programming, London, 20 & 21 April 2013

Hi all, Embecosm is pleased to announce Chip Hack (chiphack.org), a two day hands-on workshop on programming FPGAs aimed at complete beginners. Led by a team of experienced FPGA designers, and working with the DE0-nano board, we'll start with simple hardware designs to control LED's counters and push buttons and move on to a UART transmitter and (for the more ambitious) receiver. The event coincides with Hardware Freedom Day (http://www.hfday.org) and we'll be using open source designs throughout the weekend. Our final session will show how to bring up a complete ready-made OpenRISC system-on-chip, and show where you can look under the hood to learn more. No HDL or FPGA programming experience is required, but you will need to have some programming experience and an understanding of basic digital electronics. The workshop is sponsored by Embecosm, and will run at the Centre for Creative Collaboration in Acton Street, London. We are particularly keen to encourage school teachers to get involved, so we giving away a DE0-nano kit to the first 5 who apply. If you are a teacher and want to step up from Raspberry Pi, this is the workshop for you. Hardware question: tiny bluetooth/wifi module

Hi guys, I'm new to the group so it might not be the best place to ask these type of questions. Let me know where I could ask it, or search for more info. I am looking for a bluetooth/wifi module that could fit nicely in a small case the size of lego brick. It should fit there together with a battery and a controller. Is there anything like that on the market that I could look at? I need this to enable wireless connectivity for a small object to be used for installation. The size is critical. For controller I found tinyAVR which looks promising but cant find anything for Bluetooth or Wifi. Thanks! Artjom

Dear OSHUG, Below is the official announcement for Open Source Junction 4, the event which I posted a request for speakers for recently. The event is now open for general registration. OSS Watch is delighted to announce a new event in the Open Source Junction series aimed at facilitating knowledge exchange between industry and academic innovation. Open Source Junction brings together the best business and academic minds to explore how the two sectors can jointly innovate, develop and exploit open source software in conjunction with open source hardware. Open Source Junction 4 is taking place on 14th-15th March at Trinity College, Oxford and focuses on open source hardware. Open Source Hardware (OSH), like Open Source Software (OSS), is an open approach to technology where the information needed to create hardware artefacts – such as schematics, drawings and bill of materials – is distributed, allowing others to produce artefacts, and to modify and improve on the design. Open Source Hardware has a wide range of applications, including medical appliances, lab equipment, surveillance drones, and toys. If you're involved in an Open Source Hardware project, a project that uses Open Source Software in conjunction with hardware, or just enjoy cool hardware hacks, we'd like to see you at Open Source Junction. We're keen to exploit the tangible nature of Open Source Hardware at the event by encouraging attendees who are part of a hardware project, whether Open Source Hardware in the strictest sense or an innovative use of commodity hardware in conjunction with Open Source Software, to give a short presentation or demo. Good morning OSHUG friends. Yesterday I released the code for my PCBmodE project under the Apache License: https://bitbucket.org/boldport/pcbmode The overview in the link above pretty much covers the introduction. More info is on the blog: http://boldport.blogspot.co.uk/ I've created PCBmodE to satisfy an itch, so I'm not even sure how useful it would be for others. If you have ideas on how the project can be useful to you or others, or what you'd like to see it do, please let me know. I might do a short demo in the March OSHUG event; I'm expecting the first board I made with PCBmodE to arrive on Friday! cheers, saar.
