Yeah the Blue Gecko modules are based on the arm gecko series from Energy Micro who were also, you guessed it, acquired by Silabs. They are event based with excellent IDE/Libs , very low power and about $11 a module rather interesting, they also have a special dev board https://www.silabs.com/products/wireless/bluetooth/Pages/bluegecko-bluetooth-smart-module-wireless-starter-kit.aspx

Thx Alan,
Interestingly, SiLabs also acquired Telegesis who make the zigbee-Ethernet gateway we've been working with.

Hi Ken,
I agree that a workshop would be good. The possibilities are endless and your idea looks good.
The other thought is that there are so many platforms to choose from (you mention 2 and I have 4 more on my desk now). People might be interested in an overview to help them decide which to try first. (I'm adding Simblee to my list.)
A further issue is how to build gateways, whether phone or computer-based to provide UI and data transmission. See my point that I'm not sure what we ought to do in short sessions.

Andrew, Paul,
I have a self-made board with a RFduino SMT module on board - which ought to be up and running by then. It's an MSP430i2041 based design - which has 4 x 24bit individual ADCs -intended for 3 phase energy monitoring
Blog post here: http://sustburbia.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/developing-smart-sensor-solutions.h...
The Simblee also looks interesting - both are Nordic Semiconductor nRF51822 based (as is BBC Microbit).
Might be neat to tie a few of these platforms together during a workshop.

Hi Andrew, I could do something about bluetooth low energy (aka Smart) but at this point I'm not sure what aspects I want to cover. So I won't meet your deadline. However, I'll continue the work I'm doing anyway, mostly evaluating components, and may have something for you if you have any drop-outs

the time.
Would be great to have a talk on BLE and maybe a look at it in closer detail and at a few different platforms?
Best,
Andrew
