I agree that a workshop would be good. The possibilities are endless and your idea looks good.
The other thought is that there are so many platforms to choose from (you mention 2 and I have 4 more on my desk now). People might be interested in an overview to help them decide which to try first. (I'm adding Simblee to my list.)
A further issue is how to build gateways, whether phone or computer-based to provide UI and data transmission. See my point that I'm not sure what we ought to do in short sessions.

The Simblee also looks interesting - both are Nordic Semiconductor nRF51822 based (as is BBC Microbit).
Might be neat to tie a few of these platforms together during a workshop.
