I've been a victim of dud FT232RLs. My first suspicion was when about 1-in-10 were powering up with a serial number of "DUT" rather than the usual 8 character serial number. I was using them in qty of 10-20 and eventually I got to a part in the reel that was full of completely dead ICs. Might not be clone ICs but certainly this discount seller was knocking out factory rejects or similar.
